Cost and Pricing

How do I get an accurate price for EV charger installation?

The only reliable way to get an accurate price is a site assessment, because the two biggest cost variables are your switchboard condition and your cable run length, neither of which can be judged without seeing the property. Ballpark quotes without a site visit are often wrong in both directions. We do the assessment first and then provide a fixed written quote covering the full scope before any work is booked in.

Is it worth paying extra for a smart EV charger?

Even if your current tariff is flat rate, a smart charger is worth considering as a future-proofing choice. Electricity retailers are gradually shifting residential customers toward time-of-use pricing, and a smart charger will be ready to take advantage of off-peak rates as soon as you switch. The hardware cost difference between a basic and a smart model is usually a few hundred dollars, a small premium for a feature you may well use within a year or two.

Will I get a rebate or incentive for installing an EV charger at home in QLD?

Some employers offer novated lease arrangements that include the home charger installation as part of the EV package. This can allow the installation cost to be bundled into the pre-tax component of the lease, reducing the after-tax cost significantly. If your employer has an EV novated lease program, ask the salary packaging provider specifically whether home charger installation is included before quoting separately.

Choosing the Right Charger

What charging connector does a home EV charger use, and will it fit my car?

If your car came with a portable EVSE that plugs into a standard power point, often called a granny charger, you technically already have a way to charge at home. The difference is speed and convenience. A portable EVSE typically delivers 2.2kW from a standard power point, which adds around 12 to 15 kilometres of range per hour. A dedicated home charger at 7kW adds 40 to 50 kilometres per hour and is installed on a dedicated circuit that handles the continuous load safely over many years.

Which is better for a household with two EVs, a tethered or an untethered charger?

A tethered charger has a fixed cable built into the unit, so you plug directly into your car each time without needing a separate cable. An untethered charger has a socket, so you use your own Type 2 cable, which you store in the car or nearby. Tethered chargers are the more popular choice for daily home use, while untethered chargers suit households with more than one EV or those who prefer to carry their own cable.

Should I get a 7kW or a 22kW charger for my home?

A 22kW charger charges faster, but it only makes a meaningful difference if 2 conditions are met. Your home needs three-phase power, and your EV’s onboard charger needs to accept three-phase input. If either condition is absent, a 22kW unit will not perform better than a 7kW. For most Australian homes and most daily driving distances, a 7kW charger topped up overnight is more than sufficient, and the installation cost is considerably lower.

Switchboards, Phases, and Power Supply

Can I upgrade my home from single-phase to three-phase power for a fast charger?

Yes. A 7kW home charger runs on standard single-phase power, which is what most homes in Australia have, and it is not a limitation for most EV owners. Single-phase supports overnight charging comfortably for any daily driving distance under 300 to 400 kilometres. Three-phase is only needed if you want a 22kW charger or already have high-load appliances that require a three-phase connection. We confirm your supply during the site assessment and recommend the right charger for what your home can support.

How disruptive is a home EV charger installation?

A standard installation is a relatively contained job. Most of the work happens at the switchboard and along the cable run between the board and the charger location, and the only time the whole home is affected is during the switchboard isolation for the connection. Plan to be at home for the day, but beyond the short power-off period and a clear pathway for the cable run, there is not much preparation required.

How many kilometres of range does a home EV charger add per hour?

For most EVs, yes. A 7kW home charger adds around 40 to 50 kilometres of range per hour, so an 8-hour overnight charge covers 320 to 400 kilometres. Larger battery EVs with 100kWh or more may take closer to 12 to 14 hours for a full charge from empty, though most people top up each night rather than charging from flat. If you have specific range anxiety about your car and your daily driving, mention it when you get in touch, and we can give you a clearer picture.

Installation Process

Does an EV charger have to be installed by a licensed electrician?

You can verify a licensed electrician’s registration through the electrical licensing authority in your state. In most states the licence number can be searched on the authority’s public register, which confirms the licence is current and covers the type of work being carried out. We are happy to provide our licence number before booking so you can confirm it independently.

Can someone else be home for the installation if I am at work?

If you are renting, you will need written permission from your landlord or property manager before installation can proceed. Some landlords require a specific installation plan showing mounting location and cable routing before giving approval. We can provide a written installation proposal covering what is involved, including confirmation that the work will be done to Australian wiring standards with a compliance certificate.

What if I do not have a garage? Can the charger be mounted on an outside wall?

Yes, many home EV chargers are rated for outdoor installation. Chargers intended for outdoor use carry an IP rating that specifies their resistance to dust and water ingress, and we only use units rated appropriately for the mounting location. A covered or semi-sheltered position is preferable where it is available, but a fully exposed outdoor wall is workable with the right hardware. We assess the proposed location during the site visit and advise if any additional protection is needed.

Charging With Solar and Off-Peak Power

How much of my EV charging can I realistically cover with solar?

You can, provided your charger supports load management. Without it, your charger draws a fixed amount of power regardless of how much solar is available, which means it may pull from the grid even when your panels are generating enough to cover the load. A charger with load management adjusts its draw in real time to match available solar generation, and we configure this as part of the install.

Can I set my EV charger to only charge during off-peak hours?

A smart charger can, through its built-in scheduling feature. You set the charging window to match your retailer’s off-peak hours, and the charger starts automatically when the cheaper rate begins. For a household charging daily, the difference between peak and off-peak rates adds up significantly over a year, and we set up the schedule as part of the installation. If you are not already on a time-of-use tariff, ask your electricity retailer whether an EV-specific plan is available in your area.

What is the difference between a smart charger and a standard charger?

Yes. Smart chargers connect to your home Wi-Fi, and their apps let you start, stop, or pause a charging session from anywhere. This is particularly useful if you need to pause charging during a peak-rate window or want to start charging remotely before you arrive home. The app also shows you the current charging status, session energy used, and history. We connect the charger to your home network and set up the app during handover.

Strata and Body Corporate

Does my body corporate need to approve an EV charger before I can have one installed?

Some body corporates are familiar with EV charger applications and can turn around an approval in a few weeks. Others are seeing the question for the first time and take longer while they seek legal or engineering advice. The quality of the application makes a significant difference to the timeline. We provide a clear technical proposal covering the installation method, metering, load management, and impact on shared services, which gives the committee everything it needs to assess the request without coming back for more information.

Do I have any rights if my body corporate rejects my EV charger request?

If your building already has other residents charging EVs, it is worth finding out how their applications were handled, since that sets a practical precedent for your own. Committees are often more comfortable approving a request once they have already seen one work successfully. If yours would be the first in the building, we provide the same level of technical detail regardless, so the committee is assessing a complete proposal rather than a general enquiry.

Can I install an EV charger if I am renting my apartment?

Landlords occasionally worry about liability or resale impact more than cost. A licensed installation with a compliance certificate addresses the liability concern directly, since the work is certified to Australian wiring standards, and a well installed EV charger is increasingly seen as adding to a property’s appeal rather than detracting from it. We can put this in writing for your landlord if it helps move the approval along.

After Installation

Does the warranty cover both the charger and the electrical work?

A compliance certificate is also valuable from an insurance perspective. Home insurers covering electrical fires or charger-related incidents will ask whether the installation was done by a licensed electrician and whether a compliance certificate was issued. Having the certificate on file means you can answer both questions with documentation rather than relying on records from the installer. We recommend keeping it with your property and insurance documents.

Does a home EV charger need regular maintenance?

If your charger starts tripping the circuit breaker regularly, do not simply reset it and continue. A circuit that trips repeatedly is telling you something has changed, either in the charger, the wiring, or the load on that circuit. Call us before continuing to charge, and we will diagnose whether it is a charger fault, a wiring issue, or a circuit being pushed beyond its rating by other loads. Repeated tripping that is ignored can cause damage to the charger and, in rare cases, to the wiring.

Is it possible to move my EV charger to a different spot after installation?

EV Charger Brands We Install

Comparing Chargers and Brands

Is there a difference in quality between home EV charger brands?

The main factors worth comparing are the quality of the smartphone app, whether the charger supports load management for solar integration, the length of the manufacturer’s warranty, and the availability of local support if something goes wrong. Brand recognition matters less than these practical considerations, and several mid-tier brands offer better app ecosystems and load management support than some premium names. We recommend chargers we have installed and serviced, so our suggestions are based on real-world performance rather than marketing material.

What happens if I supply my own EV charger for installation?

Chargers purchased from international online marketplaces may not carry the Australian certification required for legal use here. An uncertified charger cannot be legally installed on Australian residential wiring, and doing so voids home insurance for any related claim. Before purchasing a charger independently, check that it carries the relevant Australian compliance marking indicating it has been assessed to Australian standards.

Why do you recommend certain EV charger brands over others?
